Help us cut invasive cattails!
We need volunteers on Saturday, September 12th and Sunday, September 13th (with a backup rain date one week later, September 19th and 20th) to:
The Superior Rivers Watershed Association is removing hybrid invasive cattails from the Prentice Park Fish Creek Slough. These cattails spread across the marsh on extensive underwater rhizomes, rapidly choking waterways and out-competing other plants for sunlight and soil nutrients.
By cutting the cattail below the water surface in the late summer and early fall, after their growing season, we can drown the cattail. Then, native species like sweet flag and manoomin have a chance to grow.
What will we do with all this cut cattail? We have plans in store, such as:
- Composting at Big Lake Organics
- Traditional fiber weaving workshops with April Stone
- Woven cattail domes to protect manoomin seed from birds
