Is it helpful to Superior Rivers to have monthly sustaining members? Isn’t it better to provide one big lump donation instead of lots of little donations?
Great question, and the easy answer is: both are great!
It is true that credit card processing fees mean that a big check in the mail is better for us. But it is very helpful for us to have a regular stream of income to rely on. If we know to expect 50 sustaining membership payments every single month, this helps us manage our money and pay our regular bills, as well as see upward and downward trends before they become a problem.
Whichever method is better for you comes first. We would love to count you as a monthly sustaining member so that we have a regular monthly donation stream as well (pun intended)!
I have a business. Can my business be a member?
Absolutely! We love when local businesses support watershed stewardship. Your business can become a Business Sponsor for the calendar year, getting a variety of promotional options at different support levels.
Where does the money go?
Water Quality Monitoring. Our water quality monitoring program is heavily donation funded. Our volunteers monitor over 30 sites on streams and rivers in the Lake Superior Basin, testing chemical and physical parameters monthly and collecting macroinvertebrates (aquatic bugs) twice per year. Each site costs us approximately $500 in gear, supplies, training, and staff management time to support these wonderful volunteers.
Watershed Report Cards. Community members are better stewards and more informed citizens when they have information at their fingertips. We are actively developing a regular production of Watershed Report Cards to bring you this water quality data so you know
Educational Programming. We host monthly Science on Tap talks at a local bar, field trips all summer long, workshops with our local partners, as well as other educational experiences to connect people, land, and water.
Events for our Membership. We love to throw a good party and meet all you wonderful members face to face!
Administrative Expenses. All non-profits have a cost to operate. We rely on donations to support our office space, the staff that manage these programs and organize the volunteers, or even the silly things like insurance, paper, and credit card processing fees.
How can I support your programs better?
You can adopt a site! For $500, you can sponsor the full cost of a water quality monitoring site for a year. And we even let you choose the site!
