Science on Tap: Benjamin Clarke, University of Minnesota, Duluth
Join us for this month’s Ashland Science on Tap presentation held at the Alley Restaurant!
April 21 @ 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm
Benjamin Clarke, Professor and Research Scientist
University of Minnesota, Duluth
Tick-Talk: Why Deer Ticks are More than Just a Bite
This talk explores the complex life cycle of the black-legged tick (Ixodes scapularis)
and the expanding spectrum of diseases they transmit to humans, pets, and livestock. While
Lyme disease is well-known, this session will place a special emphasis on the emergence of the
Powassan virus, a rare but serious threat. By understanding the biology and behavior of these
“hard-shell” ticks, attendees will gain the knowledge necessary to lessen the threat of tick-borne
illness and safely enjoy the outdoors.
Ben is a Professor of Biomedical Sciences at the University of Minnesota Medical
School, Duluth Campus. He holds a doctorate in Biochemistry with extensive research expertise
in immunology and inflammation. For over a decade, Ben has been a dedicated voice in
community outreach, bridging the gap between laboratory research and public safety. When he
isn’t investigating the mechanisms of disease, Ben is an avid photographer who enjoys paddling
and exploring the very backwoods trails he helps others navigate safely.
Science on Tap happens every third Tuesday of the month at the Alley Restaurant in Ashland. Each event starts with a presentation at 6:30 from a speaker about a science topic and concludes with an audience Q&A. See a list of past speakers here!
