Cattail Mats Workshop

September 20 @ 9:00 am – 12:00 pm

Sunday, September 20th 9am-noon @ Stone House Weavers Studio in Beaser School

Cattail leaves can be made into many items, both functional and decorative.

Using simple techniques and working with scissors and knife, we can learn to twist pre-harvested and dried cattail leaves into a small woven mat.

Prior weaving experience is not a must but some hand strength is required for this work.

This three hour workshop with April will set you up with the skills to make larger mats as you gain skill and experience. You can take supplies with you when you’re done.

Free but registration required. Capped at 15 participants, but others may come to watch and learn with their eyes.

Missed it? Waitlist available.

About the Instructor

April Stone is the Board President of the Superior Rivers Watershed Association and a renowned Black Ash basket weaver from the Bad River Band of Lake Superior Ojibwe. In the past few years, she has reached beyond her usual material of choice to include studying and working with Birch, Cedar, Basswood, Cattail, various other barks…and plant dyes. These materials have found their way into baskets, mats, graduation caps, sheaths and splints. The natural world is an amazing place and there is much to learn here.
