
Restoration
While our flagship program is our volunteer water quality monitoring program, the next logical step after evaluating our water quality is protecting and improving it through restoring natural ecological services like floodplains, wetlands, plant communities, and more, and human infrastructure that impacts water quality. Superior Rivers has partnered with local stewards, townships, government agencies, and other organizations since 2004 to protect and restore water quality in Wisconsin’s Lake Superior Basin.

Fish Creek Slough
Fish Creek Slough has been significantly degraded by lake water level fluctuations, hydrological impacts from logging and development in the watershed, and the introduction of invasive plants such as non-native cattails. The Superior Rivers Watershed Association has embarked on an invasive cattail removal and native plant restoration project on the Fish Creek Slough within Ashland’s Prentice Park. We are involving our community through engagement activities, input sessions, field trips, and hands-on stewardship opportunities to begin the process of restoration of this ecologically significant and beloved scenic wetland.

Reducing Flood Risk in the South Shore Watersheds of Gichigami
This project is a four-year initiative to identify regional flooding risks, specifically in the headwaters of Nemadgi River, White River, Fish Creek, and Montreal River.

Past Projects
The Superior Rivers Watershed Association has completed a variety of restoration projects and assessments since 2002. While these take many forms, they are all in pursuit of maintaining and improving water quality in Wisconsin’s Lake Superior Basin.
